فطر سعيد

1 Sep

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan. Fiṭr which means “breaking the fast”sounds similar to Fiṭir which means mushroom in slang Arabic. So as a play on words, i decided to make some mushroom cookies as a fun way to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.

I didn’t make the cookie cutter this time like i did with the sheep cookies before. I found a very old one that my mom had bought ages ago and it was perfect enough to create the mushroom cookies i had in mind.

For the cookies i used this recipe from marthastewart.com.

I used melted white chocolate and red cookie icing to decorate the cookies.

To add the dots to the mushrooms i used a toothpick and what’s left from the melted white chocolate.

Kids and adults alike, who came over for Eid, loved the cookies as they already had enough Ma’moul and chocolate while they were visiting around.

And of course, although it might seem “controversial” for some, my brother couldn’t resist taking a couple of photos of Super Mario along with the cookies! Now that’s Eid spirit! haha

Another thing we did was these boiled egg mushrooms. A trick my mom used when we were kids to seduce us into eating eggs! It’s perfect for kids for Eid breakfast as it’s easy for them to make or help in making. Just cut a thin slice from the broader side of the egg to make a stable base for the mushroom, top it with a tomato cap, and lastly make white dots by cutting the egg slice into small pieces or simply use mayonnaise. Decorate with lettuce et voilà!

I also tried this origami activity from How About Orange with a couple of cousins but we were too lazy to actually understand what we’re supposed to do in step 6.

Finally, I would like to thank my friend Rusaila for this cute and heart warming video greeting. It really cheered me up and made my heart smile. Thank you Russy! Eid Mubarak :)

May in this Eid, Allah bless us all with  warmth in our homes…  faith in our hearts…  joy to our souls…  lots and lots of yummy chocolate and everything beautiful!

Love,

Nada

Love those cookies. I’ll try the breakfast idea with my nephew and niece and see how effective it’ll be with them…or maybe for myself :)
